What is emergency contraception?

Emergency hormonal contraception is a tablet which is taken by a woman to help prevent pregnancy following unprotected sex. Unprotected sex can include when other types of contraception have failed in some way, such as a condom slipping off during sexual intercourse.

At AR Pharmacy Lyndhurst we are able offer this service for free. For more details visit us on the Lyndhurst High Street or contact us through our online form.

How does emergency hormonal contraception work?

As a result of taking emergency hormonal contraception, the release of an egg is delayed during the ovulation phase of your menstrual cycle. Rising levels of luteinising hormone (LH) within your body then triggers ovulation. When levels of LH are higher, the morning after pill has less of a chance of preventing pregnancy.

As such, it’s important that the emergency contraceptive pill is taken in the shortest time possible following unprotected sex for it to be as effective as possible. Ideally this would be the same day to maximise effectiveness.

Are there any side effects?

Some of the common side effects of taking emergency contraception include: irregular bleeding, nausea, headaches and abdominal or period pain.

Free condoms for people under 25

At AR Pharmacy Lyndhurst we also provide free condoms for people under 25 who reside in Hampshire or Southampton. To access this service you need to show a Get It On Condom Card (GIO C-Card) which works like a loyalty card.

When you are issued with a card, a pharmacist will have a confidential chat with you, to ensure you have the right information and advice. Then you can show GIO C-Card at a number of venues, including pharmacies, to get free condoms.

More information is available here.
